The Town of Plymouth will initiate a Pay-As-You-Throw program at the three transfer stations beginning on July 1, 2008. The goal of this new program is to reduce solid waste disposal, increase recycling, and thereby reduce costs for residents who use the transfer stations.
Under the new program, trash disposal and recycling will remain the same. The only change will be how residents pay their fees. As in past years, a flat annual fee will be required for entry to the transfer stations, however, it will be significantly lower than previous years' rates. In addition to the lower annual fee, residents will purchase bags for disposal of trash according to their needs. This fee system is similar to other utilities, such as water or electricity, in which the subscriber pays a basic service fee and a variable fee based on usage. Please click HERE for Fee
Information.
Trash must be contained in an official program bag when disposed of into the compactors. The program bags will not be sold at the transfer stations or at Town Hall, but will be sold in local stores where residents can currently purchase their "regular" trash bags. The Town is working with local stores to make the program bags available at locations that will be convenient for residents. Official program bags will be available for purchase in early June. Please check back for a list of stores where they will be available. The bags will be available in two sizes, 15 gallon and 30 gallon, to suit the varying needs of different households.
Reyclable materials can be recycled at no additional charge, however, items that currently require a fee, such as refrigerators and TVs, will remain fee items. Please see the Recycling Guidelines for more information on what is recyclable.
With this program, residents will have more control over their solid waste costs. They will have the opportunity to reduce their costs by reducing waste produced, reusing or donating reusable materials, and recycling what cannot be reused.
