Department of Public Works Weekly Construction Updates

Week of January 20, 2023: Water Street Sewer Interceptor Replacement & Pump Station Flood Barrier Wall

The Town of Plymouth Department of Public Works provides weekly construction project updates for significant improvements to infrastructure. Learn more about the status of ongoing projects by viewing the following descriptions: 

Water Street Pump Station Flood Barrier Wall

No Construction activities took place Monday January 16, 2023, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Construction activities for this week consisted of the following:

  • The concrete work for the flood wall along the site is approximately 90% complete, with 3 wall sections poured this week.
  • Manafort has been on-site all week installing wall forms. 
  • Continued grinding, scraping, and cleaning of the inside face of the flood wall.
  • Gone Green was on site to complete the conduit work for electrical and fiberoptic cables.
  • Crew continues to dewater across the site to lower the groundwater table and perform work in the dry.

What's happening in the next two weeks: 

Manafort will resume work on-site, the week of January 23, 2023 and will perform the following activities:

  • Complete the concrete work for the flood wall.
  • Install the area drain and complete the remaining underdrain along the eastern side of the wall, including backfill.
  • Re-establish fiberoptic connection underground through conduits previously installed.
  • Continue grinding, scraping, and cleaning of the concrete flood wall.
  • Continue installing shelf and wall forms along the wall alignment.
  • Placement of concrete in the prepared wall sections.

Water Street Sewer Interceptor Replacement

Construction Activities Completed the Week of January 20, 2023

Construction activities for this week consisted of the following:

  • There were no activities on Monday, 1/16, in observance of MLK day.
  • Snow and ice cleanup from the site due to the weekend’s winter storm.
  • Northern Construction Services (Northern) continued driving steel sheeting using a hydraulic hammer within the excavated pavement along the first 300 feet of the interceptor alignment.
  • Excavation of trench down to the existing 30” sewer main.
  • Placing of ¾” crushed stone.
  • Mobilized and installed a 30” mechanical joint between existing and proposed sewer mains.
  • The deep dewatering wells continue to pump groundwater 27 hours a day, seven days a week. Discharge is going through frac tanks.
  • Traffic will continue to be detoured per the construction signage and the message boards provided for the project.
  • Site cleanup will take place at the end of each day. 

What's happening in the next two weeks: 

Northern Construction Services will resume on-site work for the week of January 23, 2023. The work activities that will be performed in the two coming weeks (the week of January 23, 2023 and the week of January 30, 2023) are the following:

  • Northern Construction Company will continue the daily movement and vibration monitoring surveys.
  • Excavation and piping installation from the point of connection to the first sewer manhole (SMH-06).
  • Installation of the first manhole.
  • Continue installation of earth support, working towards Chilton Street.
  • Continue pipe installation, connection to the first manhole, and continue along Water Street, working toward Chilton Street.
  • Start removal of earth support where the trench has been backfilled.
  • It is anticipated that groundwater will be under control with the deep wells, and additional sumps will handle any water encountered in the trench during the excavations. The contractor will re-evaluate and install as required if a vacuum pump system is needed.
