[ARCHIVED] Crossover Open for Vehicle Access

The Crossover is currently open with space for approximately 70 vehicles.  The piping plover nests that were located near the Crossover were washed out during the May 22 nor'easter, which unfortunately, pushes back the timeline when chicks will be present and vehicle restrictions will likely last later into the summer.  When the plovers lay new nests, which is expected any day now, vehicle access may be reduced, and vehicle restrictions that will likely close the Crossover will be implemented when the nests begin hatching.  Please check the Long Beach Information page for updates on vehicle access before heading out to the beach.

A night-time vehicle restriction is currently in place for the areas beyond the first cottage on the beach.  Participation in the Massachusetts Habitat Conservation Plan for Piping Plover gives the Town the flexibility to keep the road open during the day even when unfledged piping plover and least tern chicks are present; however, the road has to close at night.  The areas beyond the first cottage on the beach close to vehicles and electric bikes at 7:00pm, including for fishing access.  The designated roadside parking areas south of the first cottage are available until 9:00pm as usual.
