[ARCHIVED] Crossover Access Update - Least Tern Hatch 7/17/23

A least tern nest located near the Crossover hatched the morning of July 17.  The required vehicle-free buffer (100yd) has been implemented, and Crossover vehicle access has been reduced to approximately 17 vehicles.  The Natural Resources staff will continue monitoring nesting activity, including unhatched nests in that area and will adjust the vehicle restrictions as needed to provided the required buffers.

Vehicle-free buffer areas are required when unfledged chicks are present; least tern chicks fledge (are able to fly) when they are about 21 days old.  Vehicle access will be increased when allowable under the Plymouth Long Beach Management Plan, the Final Order of Conditions issued by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, the Conditional "No Take" Determination issued by the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife, and the state and federal guidelines for managing recreational activities on beaches to avoid "take" of species protected under the Massachusetts and federal Endangered Species Act.

Check the Long Beach Information page for updates before heading out to the beach.
