Boating Safety

Paddle Sports Safety

Paddle sports (canoe, kayak and SUP) are a great way to explore the inland and shoreside waters of Plymouth. With the increase in popularity, we have seen an increase in calls relating to paddle sports. We have found that boaters purchase a vessel and are excited to get on the water but don't have the necessary safety equipment. A life jacket and audible signaling device (whistle) are required. Life jackets are required to be worn from September 15th to May 15th. See a free course that is good for new and experienced paddlers.

We also have "If found Contact" stickers in the office. Feel free to stop by and pick one up. Every time a kayak goes adrift it generates a response from the Harbormaster and the USCG searching for someone in the water. Having a sticker can enable us to identify and find the status of the owner quickly.Boating Safety Class

The Hanson-Milone Safe Boating Act was signed into law by Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey on January 8, 2025. This legislation mandates that all boat operators in the Commonwealth obtain a boater safety certificate to improve safety on state waterways by providing necessary education. The act aims to enhance boater education and safety standards. To obtain your boater safety certificate you can attend a boating safety course in person or take the course online. For more information, please read below, or contact us directly.

What Does This Mean for Boaters?

Starting April 1, 2026, anyone wishing to operate a motorized vessel in Massachusetts will be required to complete an approved boating safety education course. The goal is to ensure that every boater has the skills and knowledge needed to operate their vessel safely, reducing accidents and ensuring a more enjoyable experience for all. The education program will cover important topics such as:

  • Navigation Rules: Understand how to safely maneuver on the water and avoid collisions.
  • Emergency Procedures: Learn what to do in case of an emergency to protect yourself and your passengers.
  • Environmental Protections: Gain awareness of practices that protect Massachusetts' treasured natural resources.

Who Needs to Enroll?

  • If you were born after January 1, 1989, you must complete the course by April 1, 2026, with no penalties assessed until September 1, 2026.
  • If you were born on or before January 1, 1989, you’ll have until April 1, 2028, to complete the course.
